What is Earth 2
Earth 2 describes itself as a futuristic concept of a second earth; a metaverse between a virtual and physical reality. Well with that most has probably been said. The platform has a clear long term vision. If any concept of a virtual world has ever been successful, it has probably not come as close to early success as Earth 2 has.
In a nutshell, Earth 2 is a vision of a game world that builds on the actual earth. Within it, users will be able to buy property, trade land and resources, and potentially monetize their property with real and virtual currency. What the world will actually look like in the future nobody, but the developers, know.
What it is at the moment, is not what it envisions to be. The only thing Earth 2 currently is, is a trading platform for a virtual good called tiles. A tile is a piece of 10×10 meters of land, mapped on our entire planet earth. You can effectively buy a small piece of land that can be traded with others.
How does buying land and trading work
The first phase of the project revolves around claiming a place on the map. The world in Earth 2, is split up into small pieces. Everyone who wants to shell out a few dollars, can own a piece.
Buying land is very easy. After logging on to the site, you will be presented with a map of the world, cut up into small 10×10 meter tile pieces of land. You can simply select the tiles that have not been taken (without a flag on them) and pay by paypal to claim your piece of property.
Another option to acquire land, is to buy land off of someone on the free market. The marketplace, as it is called in the game, provides all users with an overview of the tiles that are up for grabs. When you own a piece of land, you are able to choose whether you would like to let others place a bid for your property, or ask for a fixed price.
The system works well, and even though the marketplace is still somewhat unstructured and a pain to scroll through, you might find some gems.
The various project phases
Let me get back to the various phases. There are three (I think to recall that there were four listed on the site a while back, but I might be mistaken).
- The first phase: claim your land
- The second phase: resources will be released
- Third (and potentially final) phase: terrain
The first phase is the one we are in at the moment. As described above, this is the time to purchase your land and trade it to get the best slots. The inventors have stated that it is key to own areas that are: potentially rich of natural resources, have a lot of foot traffic (shopping streets that can be monetized), or densely populated (allowing you to collect „taxes“ from your property)
Yet, it won‘t be clear which resources are important until the second phase of the project is rolled out. Nobody knows whether or not the resources will randomly be spread across the globe. Furthermore, it‘s unclear if it would be better to own infrastructure, or just a lot of land.
What is happening right now, is interesting. Every 100.000 tiles that are sold in a particular country, the new land price rises. New and emerging markets are still fairly cheap, because we are still able to purchase tiles from the first, second and third 100.000 tiles that were sold in that country. These tiles are currently sold (new) between 0.50-3.00 USD.
There is great value in being a first mover, a believer in the platform. For the simple reason that most of the land prices will still go up as more is sold. Next to that, the value of your property will rise when tiles in the same country are traded. Once others start to offer their tiles on the marketplace, the value of tiles in that country, go up.

Scam or genius idea
I love the Earth 2 concept. The site is well thought out, obviously under construction, but the founding team is extremely strong and well respected in the gaming community. Some on the internet have voiced their concerns regarding the sustainability of the project. However, I am personally open to giving it a shot. I will certainly not invest tens of thousands of dollars in tiles, but I want to see how it progresses.
Whatever you do, please don‘t invest any money in Earth 2 that you cannot afford to lose. The incremental price increases are a very strong emotional trigger. And you have to keep reminding yourself, that this is a game – and a startup. A lot could go wrong and thousands of people could lose their money if the developers decide to pull the plug and take their earnings home.
This is either crazy and fantastic scam, or an absolutely genius idea. I hope it will be the latter. We have recently started a Facebook Group called: Earth 2 – Switzerland. Join the conversation.
Have a great day, stay healthy and see you on Earth 2.
