Why I Love Working as a Fractional Executive

A Different Kind of Leadership

People often ask me what it means to be a fractional executive. Some assume it’s just another fancy name for a consultant, but it’s not. The difference is simple: I don’t just advise—I lead. As a fractional executive, I step into businesses, take on real leadership roles, and make strategic decisions that drive results.

For me, that’s what makes this work so rewarding. I get to roll up my sleeves, work with teams, and actually implement change—not just suggest ideas and leave.

The Appeal of Being Fractional

So why not take a full-time executive role? I’ve been there before. But the beauty of being fractional is the variety, flexibility, and impact. I don’t get stuck in the politics or the routine of one company. Instead, I work across multiple businesses, applying what I’ve learned from one industry to another.

It’s like being a free agent in the corporate world—I choose projects that excite me, work with teams that inspire me, and focus on solving real business challenges.

Why Companies Choose Fractional Leaders

For companies, hiring a fractional executive is a game-changer. They get senior-level expertise without the full-time cost. A full-time CFO might cost €360,000 a year, but a fractional CFO can bring the same expertise for half the price.

But it’s not just about saving money—it’s about speed and efficiency. When I come into a company, I don’t waste time. I’ve seen enough businesses to know what works, and I make decisions quickly. I don’t get caught up in internal politics or drawn-out meetings. Instead, I bring a fresh perspective and help teams move forward with clarity.

The Challenge of Being a Fractional Executive

It’s not all easy, though. This kind of work requires a certain mindset. There’s no guaranteed paycheck, no corporate safety net. It means being comfortable with uncertainty and always thinking ahead.

I also have to be highly selective about my clients. I don’t just take on any company—I need to know that I can make a real difference. The relationship has to be built on trust, transparency, and alignment. If that’s missing, it won’t work.

Why I Keep Doing This Work

At the end of the day, I love the freedom, the variety, and the ability to drive real impact. I get to help companies grow, mentor teams, and solve complex problems, all while maintaining my independence.

And as the business world continues to evolve, I believe the fractional model is here to stay. Companies need agile leaders who can step in, create change, and move on when the time is right. That’s exactly what I do—and it’s why I wouldn’t trade this career path for anything else.

What do you think? Would a fractional executive be the right fit for your business? Let’s talk.
