SSO Congress 2025: Why Social Media is a Real Opportunity for Dental Practices

In May 2025, I will have the opportunity to speak at the SSO Congress in Lugano. From May 22 to 24, experts in dentistry will gather under the theme “Risks in Dental Practices – Recognize, Decide, Act” to discuss key topics in the field.
My Presentation: “Using Social Media – Opportunities and Risks for Dental Practices.” —Remco Livain
Why Social Media?
Over the past few years, I’ve gained significant experience in digital communication as an interim CMO for companies like DrSmile (Straumann Group), the Linthpraxen Group, and the online training provider Posedus. During this time, I’ve seen how much potential social media holds for dental practices—and how often it remains underutilized.
For many practices, social media is either something that’s handled “on the side” by dental assistants or presented in such a staged way that it completely misses the target audience. Both approaches miss the mark, as:
- Social media is an excellent tool for customer acquisition, relationship building, and customer service.
- More and more people spend a significant amount of time on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Those who understand this can be present in their patients’ daily lives and build trust.
Authenticity and the Right Tools
A successful social media strategy doesn’t require overly complicated approaches. It comes down to two key factors:
- Authenticity – Show who you are, what values your practice represents, and how you support your patients. Trust is built through genuine and relatable content.
- Effective communication tools – Channels like WhatsApp for Business or Instagram Direct Messages are excellent tools for direct communication with patients but are still overlooked by many practices.
Opportunities and Risks
In my presentation, I’ll also address the potential risks of using social media incorrectly. Inauthentic content or a lack of strategy can quickly backfire. However, with a clear plan and the right approach, social media can become a true success factor.
Will I See You in Lugano?
I look forward to speaking to 400–500 participants about the opportunities and challenges social media presents for dental practices. The SSO Congress is a great opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues and gain new insights for your own practice.
